On 10 August 1941 Liberator AM261 took-off from Heathfield (Ayr) to fly to Gander, Canada, returning ferry crews to bring additional new aircraft across the Atlantic. Shortly after take-off the aircraft entered cloud and flew into Mullach Buidhe near the head of Coire Lan. The flight crews on-board were from Royal Air Force Ferry Command (RAFFC), Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) and British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). All 22 of the crew and passengers perished in the crash.
